ASEM
Australasian Society for Emergency Medicine
The Society was established in 1981 by practitioners who foresaw the emergence of the specialty of emergency medicine and the future implications for the care of acutely ill patients attending hospital "casualties". From those beginnings emerged the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, formally incorporated in 1984. The Society continues to provide a forum for discussion and debate on issues of relevance to emergency medicine.
ASCMO
Australasian Society of Career Medical Officers
is a non-profit organisation that began as the Career Medical Officers Association (CMOA) in 1996. Our organisation is run by Career Medical Officers (CMOs) for CMOs. CMOs are also known as SMOs (Senior Medical Officers), HMOs (Hospital Medical Officers) and MMOs (Multi-skilled Medical Officers) in various parts of Australia, as well as MOSSs (Medical Officers, Special Scale) in New Zealand. ASCMO Membership Fees are both nominal and tax deductible.
ACEM
Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
is an incorporated educational institution whose prime objective is the training and examination of specialist emergency physicians for Australia and New Zealand. ACEM has a vital interest in the quality of emergency medical care provided to the community and therefore has a wide range of subsidiary objectives relating to emergency department accreditation, policies and standards for the emergency medical system, teaching and research, publication, and those aspects of the medico political framework that have a direct impact on health outcomes for emergency patients.
EMST (ATLS)
The Early Management of Severe Trauma
offers courses in the management of injury victims in the first one to two hours following severe injury. Emphasis is placed on life-saving skills and a systematic clinical approach. EMST is directed at two groups of doctors: those who deal with major trauma on a regular basis and those who must occasionally evaluate and manage the seriously injured patient, such as the isolated rural practitioner.
ELS
Emergency Life Support (ELS) Course
A course which teaches non-specialist doctors how to deal with a broad range of medical emergencies organised by a small number of Australian Emergency Medicine specialists, under the auspices of the Australasian Society for Emergency Medicine. NB: This course does not deal with the management of severe trauma.
APLS
Advanced Paediatric Life Support
The aim of this course is to provide an educational package for all health care personnel working with acutely ill and injured children. The course is taught by qualified instructors on a voluntary basis.
